The best Ikos alternatives and £30 Traitors castle stays 🏰

Iconic castles, dreamy 5* resorts, a bumper guide to cruises and did you realise these countries charge a tourist tax?! 😱

Your must read travel round up 👣

Hello CHE-ers (need to workshop that) - how’s your January going?

I’m not going to lie, mine has become a bit of a whirlwind, as I’ve got FOUR trips happening over the next couple of weeks. Let’s just say it was not planned but there were a couple of opportunities too good to say no to… You’ll see what I mean in the near future but I’m sworn to secrecy for now! 🤫

I’m currently on trip 2, sat writing to you from Gare de Lyon in Paris before I take the train to Barcelona - something I’ve been wanting to do for ages!

If my gallivanting is giving you itchy feet, and you missed my special edition newsletter last Sunday, then check out my round up of last-minute hotel stays, where you could still bag an absolute bargain on a weekend – or longer – away.

Also, we’ve got plenty coming up in this week’s newsletter including:

  • Alternatives to Ikos hotels 🌴

  • A beginners guide to cruises 🚢

  • Castle hotel stays for Traitors fans 🏰

  • The highest tourist taxes in Europe🧾

Summer travels 😎

If you’re yet to book your summer holiday and fancy somewhere a bit special, you might have come across ‘Ikos’. Or, if you know anyone has been, you will 100% have been told about it. 😆 People are OBSESSED.

The problem is that they are so expensive and get booked up so fast! And so we’ve done our best to find some more alternatives that still have the same ✨vibe✨.

And if you’ve ever been curious about a cruise, now’s the time to figure out if it really is for you with our bumper beginners guide, which covers what’s included, what you can expect on board and of course, tips for a cheaper cruise!

Best Ikos alternatives

We had a really horrible time researching for this one… 😆

Beginners guide to cruises

If you’re new to cruises, this is the ultimate guide for you!

Viral Vacay📲

Where we track down the accommodation that’s gone viral, find out how much it actually costs and if needs be, suggest a cheaper alternative 🕵️‍♀️

What is it? The island of Corfu and its STUNNING beaches and clear seas.

How viral? This video of five of the best has an eye popping 2.9M views on TikTok.

How much? For Ultra All Inclusive, you could stay at Ikos Dassia in a superior double with a sea view from £588 per night in September (minimum stay 5 nights). It has its own beach, but you’re also only a half hour drive from the first two beaches in the vid!

Cheaper alternative? Stay at the lush Domes of Corfu, Autograph Collection in a king room with a balcony and sea view. Rooms start at £225 per night for bed and breakfast and a local bus service will whizz you around the island.

Cheaper still? Check into Onore Luxury Suites where a deluxe suite with a sea view will cost you from only £113 a night.

Bonnie holidays 🤍💙

With the final of the Traitors this week, we’ve scouted out some castle hotels for you to enjoy. And keeping the theme on Scotland, it’s been announced that Edinburgh plans to introduce a tourist tax for overnight visitors from July 2026, so we’ve taken a look at which other European destinations have these sorts of taxes too.

We’ve got battlements for every budget so you’re sure to find something special that suits your spend.

Tourist taxes to watch out for

Did you realise these European destinations charge their tourists this extra tax?! Some of them are pricey!

My deal of the week

I could pretend I didn’t see this coming but the truth is, I always knew I was going to split opinion on the internet this week when I posted this video challenging our producer Joe on the mammoth sized extension lead he takes on all his travels 😆

Exhibit A:

I TOLD YOU IT WAS A WHOPPER!!!

Now I know people love this travel hack, and I get it if you need something that plugs in next to your bed or by a mirror but for Joe… Joe just needed his phone by his bed, and so I had a better suggestion for him…

Use a high quality travel adaptor with multiple ports, along with a longer USB-C cable for his phone in case a hotel room doesn’t have a plug by the bed. This is my exact setup and it lets me charge 6 things - including 1 thing with a proper pin plug - at once and thanks to a fast charging port, it can charge my laptop too without slowing everything down.

This saves on the space of an extension lead, plus means you don’t have to pack bulky plug heads, or an adaptor if you’re going abroad.

Exhibit B:

Now, it’s fair to say that this idea has been accepted by some but for many others, it’s gone down like a lead balloon. And look, I’m not one to be too proud to admit defeat and so I’m willing to say…

YOU’RE ALL WRONG.

YOU WILL NOT MAKE ME CHANGE MY MIND.

I WILL DIE ON THIS HILL.

😆 😆 😆

Anyway, the plug currently has 15% off down to £34 though it can go down to £30 in bigger sales if you want to wait for that (I often post on my Instagram when it goes this low!)

Jokes aside - DO WHAT WORKS FOR YOU - know lots of you travel with a suitcase as standard and pack big items like hairdryers etc. And in fact, I’d love for you to have your say on what you make of this whole debacle in the poll down below 👇

Look mum, I’m on the telly!

Rather than being on the TV this week, I’ve been doing some writing for other people!

Including my Deals of the Week which I select for TravelSupermarket every week as part of my work as one of their travel experts.

This updates once a week so if you click fast, you’ll find a 7 night holiday to Majorca for just £218!! However, if you come to this a bit later, you may see some of my top picks for next week which include a load of half board deals to sunnier climates ☀️

I do get paid to work with them (TA LOVES) but not to share here, but there’s always some cracking deals and so it feels a shame to not spread the love. You can always find a link to these in my link in bio over on my socials - or just save this email and use the link here!

What the team’s been loving this week!

When we’ve not been working really hard - ahem - here’s some of the things that we’ve been enjoying over on socials.

Anna: I followed Nessa immediately after she came up on my fyp on TikTok - I loved the mix of hilarity with actually useful travel tips 😂 Plus her pictures turned out stunning!

Katie: Chelsea isn’t the only one that’s really (seal-y?) into squishy seals. I can’t get over this adorable vid.

Chelsea: My phone has definitely worked out I’m going skiing next week and so has loaded my fyp with loads of ski videos! But this one of a woman doing some ski jumps made me cackle - it’s the uploader revealing that she managed to nail every single one doing it like this in the comments that made it for me 😆

And that’s a wrap!

That’s all for this week – thanks if you made it this far and why not let me know you did so by answering the poll below ⬇️

If you have a mate or family member who you think would love this newsletter too, they’ll just need to sign up here.
